Jane Campion
Jane Campion was born in Wellington, the daughter of actors Richard and Edith Campion. Jane has often described herself as βan obscure girl director from New Zealand.β
Jane graduated in Anthropology from Victoria University 1975, and with a painting major from the Sydney College of the Arts in 1979. She attended the Australian School of Film and Television.
Campion showed enormous talent from the outset. Her first short film, Peel, won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1986, making Jane Campion the first woman ever to win the prestigious award.
She went on to win the The LA Film Critics' New Generation Award for her premiere feature, Sweetie. In 1990 her second feature, An Angel At My Table β based on the autobiographies of Janet Frame - won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
In 1993 Campion won her second Palme d'Or for her film, The Piano. The following year The Piano was nominated for 7 Academy awards, including Costume, Cinematography, Editing and Best Picture. Jane took out the award for Best Original Screenplay while Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin won Best Lead and Supporting Actress respectively.
Following the completion of In the Cut in 2003, Sydney-based Jane has taken a break from film making.
