Bruno Lawrence, 1941-1995

“I'll never be a Hollywood lead. I'm too ugly and bald,” Bruno Lawrence once said. Yet he was one of New Zealand's most convincing and best loved actors.

A talented musician and writer, Lawrence made his acting debut in Tank Busters (1970). He also performed with Blerta making music as well as films. As the feature film industry picked up speed, Bruno Lawrence was at its heart. He starred in Wild Man (1977), Smash Palace (1982), The Quiet Earth (1986) and Utu (1983), the film he liked best.

He also found success as a television actor in both Australia and New Zealand.
