Peter Coates' 1979 TVNZ production of Puccini's comic opera "Gianni Schicchi".
From the DVD sleeve blurb:
'Gianni Schicchi' is Puccini's only comic opera and is a delight to produce because of its range of characters and the lovely melodies contained in its score. In the early 1970's I produced this opera for Opera Technique with Barry Mora in the title role, which proved very sucessful with local critics and local audiences. As Gianni Schicchi was the first opera I produced for television, directing it for the theatre was of considerable benefit to my eventual television production. John Charles, then the Head of Entertainment encouraged me to work on television opera and worked in tandem with me producing Douglas Moore's "Gallantry" - a modern 'soap opera' opera, with a different cast and musical director at the same time.
I was fortunate with cast and crew -- great 'old-timers' like Grahame Clifford, Geoffrey De Lautour, Graeme Gorton, Emily Mair and Anthea Moller playing character roles that suited their talents admirably. With them came top singers of the next generation; tenor Tony Benfell, soprano Louise Malloy and bass-baritone Roger Wilson. Another fortunate choice was the conductor, Russell Channell. He had been a conductor-repetiteur with the old NZ Opera Company when I worked with them in the 1960's. He came over from Brisbane to work with us and the NZSO on the sound recording, and did a great job, but sadly never worked in New zealand again.
Overall a very sucessful production that lead to the production of another one act opera, Pagliacci and then on to the full scale three act operas of the 1980's - The Barber of Seville; Die Fledermaus; Hansel and Gretel, and The Magic Flute.
