Description

COUNTRY CALENDAR - "TAILS OF TAUTANE"
It's the first day of tailing on Tautane Station in southern Hawkes Bay. For the next two weeks, eleven people will muster, dock mark and cut over 16000 lambs. Bob Bryson manages 9500 acres, 3800 hectares, 16000 ewes and 1700 breeding cows and a permanent staff of eight. Tautane is on the coast and on the property, Cape Turnagain. Tautane has been farmed since 1853 with the Herrick brothers, whose beneficiaries are today's absentee owners, taking over 81 years ago. It's a traditional established station with single men's quarters, cook shop and accommodation for the hacks.
