Remember to come back each month to check out the next decade.

What's it all about

Do you remember when the Pakuranga housewife squealed "Vim" or when Hugo said, "You go"?

From the familiar jingles that stick in your head, to the bizarre and obscure, the Film Archive holds thousands of television commercials in its collections. Some are award-winning, big budget productions, while others are more humble and homegrown. There are well-documented gems which signalled the beginning of a film making career, take Lee Tamahori's ASB series or Christine Jeffs' Lotto ads for example. But, for the vast majority, we know little about the production stories, and even less about the cast and crew.

Yet television commercials tell us a great deal about the community they are made for - our morals, standards, dress sense, attitudes to gender, race and much, much more.

Sellebration takes a representative sample of TV commercials from the 1960s to the 1990s from the extensive collection held at the Film Archive. We've had fun choosing them and hope you have as much enjoyment in the trip down memory lane.

Each month we'll launch another decade. We welcome your feedback and remember to vote for your favourites.

They sure don’t make them like the used to!
