On 27 January 1978, Suburban Reptiles released their debut single, Megaton, backed by Desert Patrol. It was the first punk record by a New Zealand band.

Talking to Roger Shepherd about the Megaton video, Simon Grigg (manager of the Reptiles) had this to say: "Buster says he can't recall it, either being made or who did it. I emailed a couple of other Reps but it's a funny one.  It looks like Zero is miming but maybe not. It could be just random footage stuck together. I was filmed before or around the Classic Cinema gig in Jan/Feb 78, I guess since that's the venue. I have a very vague memory of someone turning up with a camera and the Reps playing up to it.

1978 was a big year for the Suburban Reptiles, along with releasing NZ's first punk record, they also appeared on the soundtrack of David Blyth's feature Angel Mine which was released with the censor's warning: 'This film contains punk cult material!'
