Water_works
 
Auckland artist Carolin Casey presents an exciting new body of work for the Film Archive’s Auckland gallery space. Water_works is an immersive sound and moving image installation that looks at the systematic and commercial use of water within our seemingly natural environment.
 
Primarily known for her photography, Casey is focused on industrial landscape-based subjects that are active sites of labour, and sites of systematised human activity for functional purposes. She is interested in the field of biomimicry, where human technology is designed in imitation of nature and her efficient natural systems.
 
Water_works presents the possibility of producing singular works to discuss a world of increasingly homogenised manmade spaces. Casey says: “Within these systems of production, consumption, and distribution, there occurs beauty, drama, spectacle, and artifice.
 
In the lush blue video works the water ebbs and flows as normal, even mimicking what occurs naturally, however beneath the surface it is tightly controlled and cunningly channeled for use as power storage and generation.
