Te Hiko Hou
20 February - 28 March 2013

Nathan Pohio (Kati Mamoe, Ngai Tahu and Waitaha)
Shannon Te Ao (Ngati Tuwharetoa) collaborating with Iain Frengley
Rangituhia Hollis (Ngati Porou, Ngati Kahungunu)

Curated by Jenny Gillam and Eugene Hansen - The Film Archive 2012 Curators at Large

The first new exhibition of the year at The Film Archive Auckland space is Te Hiko Hou. Translating as The New Electric, this exciting installation of digital film-making presents the work of three Maori artists exploring aspects of contemporary ethnicity, its politics and relationship to a cultural identity which is becoming ever more diverse and individually specific. This exhibition is curated by Massey University Wellington Lecturers Jenny Gillam and Eugene Hansen - as The Film Archive 2012 Curators at Large.

The curators note that the three artists, Shannon Te Ao, Nathan Pohio, and Rangituhia Hollis, all come from urban backgrounds and knowingly reject the commonly presented stereotypes of Maori male identity. Working in an increasingly technologically engaged and globally networked context, each approaches the construction of identity differently, yet they all point to the psychologically charged space between our individual and communally lived experience of Aotearoa.

Critic and academic Dr Huhana Smith reviewed the Wellington Archive iteration of this exhibition for circuit.org.nz and concluded “Te Hiko Hou is a compelling trip through the convoluted dynamic of identity politics on many levels and well worth the undertaking.”
