Touring Film Show
1 December, 2004
Do you find yourself marvelling at how quickly new houses and subdivisions have sprung up in your area? Or noticing how quickly fashions make a comeback?
Then you'll relish the chance to glimpse the 1949 Lyall bay Surf Carnival, Len Southward breaking the Australasian speed record and a late 1920's view from the Paekakariki Hill. All these things and more are on the menu when the New Zealand Film Archive brings its Touring Film Show to a venue near you. A new venture for 2004, staff hope the local content and quirky films of the Touring Film Show will introduce a new audience to the Archive's collection. Jane Paul is the National Programmes Manager and co-ordinator of the tour, according to Jane βIt's essential we make these films easily available to the public β we preserve these films for a reason, they are part of our heritage.β
The Touring Film Show starts its run in the on the Kapiti Coast and 10 days later presents a final show in Eastbourne. With footage dating back as far as 1908 much of the selection is silent and the Film Archive is thrilled to have local freelance musician Susan Alexander providing piano accompaniment. Susan trained at the Royal Academy in London, is a fellow of the Trinity College of Music and has plenty of experience improvising piano music for silent movies. The Touring Film Show screenings are free, suitable for all ages and coming to a venue near you.
