SoundTracks 5: A Night of Live Music and Images

1 November, 2004
One of the highlights of Wellington's experimental music scene is just around the corner and SoundTracks 5 is set to be bigger than ever.

2004 is the 5th anniversary of SoundTracks; a Night of Live Music and Images presented by the New Zealand Film Archive. This year the event will be held on Wednesday 24 November at Shed 11 and will feature Wellington artists Birchville Cat Motel , Disasteradio and The Timeless Sounds along with New Zealand underground stalwart, Brian Crook.

As ever, SoundTracks is a chance for the public to experience some of the lesser-known films from the archive first-hand. Performers select their own footage to accompany and tend toward the obscure. The latest selections will make for some fascinating viewing – picks include an amateur horror-drama Two Live Ghosts and a bizarre rugby instructional training film from 1930 entitled Control, 0:01:01 .

The Timeless Sounds will be scoring a short film made as a teenager by Pacific Films co-founder the late Roger Mirams. Mirams' film, The Gangsters Come to Christchurch was good enough to screen at local theatres and began his life's work in film. This year anyone seeking an early taste of SoundTracks is in luck. Previous performances have been so successful they have spawned an exhibition – Soundtracks Redux: Music for Film. Redux will play at the Film Archive's Mediaplex on Taranaki Street from Friday 19 November.

Entry to SoundTracks is by Koha and Soundtrack Redux: Music for Film is free.
