Tiffany Rewa Newrick | New Work
“In a narrow corridor, lined with unpainted steel doors, all is empty and still. Nothing especially captivating here, unless one enjoys speculating on such spaces and their (possible) contents. After a short while, however, a nebulous, moving form emerges from the darkened far end. This form, whatever it is or its motives, is coming for us, and, from our rigid, frozen vantage point, we are forced to stare straight ahead. The lockers either side offer no recourse, unless it is to reflect on the peculiarity of incarcerating desirable possessions in the same way we do with undesirable people. Contrasted with the intrinsic relationships between freedom and anonymity - how does this creature, whatever it is or its provenance, have free rein in the neutral space of the corridor? To be nothing, nobody, nowhere, truly universal. Accountable to none.” — Excerpt from exhibition text by Matthew Crookes.
TIFFANY REWA NEWRICK was born in Paraparaumu, raised in the sunny Hawkes Bay, and currently resides in Waitakere City, New Zealand. Newrick is a sculptor and installation artist, using multi-media, video and transitory materials to create site-specific installations and transient objects. New Work is Newrick’s first solo show, after graduating from AUT University with a Master of Art & Design in 2009. Newrick has participated in group shows nationally and was included in the Wintergarden Project as part of The Auckland International Film Festival 2008, curated by The Film Archive.
"We have here an interesting b/w film installation positioned in the NZFA room next door to ARTSPACE: two projections on opposite walls, with cameras aimed down two narrow corridors that are ostensibly linked up to be a continuing long narrow space. It has small roller doors on one side and hinged locker doors on the other." – Read the review by John Hurrell
The exhibition runs from 11 July - 15 August 2009.
