Spanning the Waitemata

The four-lane Auckland Harbour Bridge opened to traffic on 30 May 1959.

The opening of The Bridge was a big deal in our transport history and its construction was well documented by film makers. The celebrations were huge and included a walk over the bridge, thousands turned out for the event, many with their home movie cameras.

Read more about the Harbour Bridge and watch video footage from the Archive's collection of home movies and industrial documentaries.

The aim of the project is to screen every single surviving New Zealand feature film at least one time.
