Screening programmes are available in the following topic areas supporting topic coverage in NZQA and NCEA prescriptions. These are suggested topic areas only – requests are catered for on an individual basis. Stand alone titles from our Catalogue can also be requested - go to the Catalogue for full coverage of Film Archive holdings.

 

Many English / Media Studies programmes have become titles in the new ON DISK library for secondary school loan. All titles however can be screened and guided by teachers from the Film archive team.

The Soap Opera

A discussion of the history of the soap opera from its introduction to radio in the 1930s, until the modern day television phenomena that it has become. This programme uses NZ examples including Close to Home and Shortland Street to illustrate the codes and conventions of the soap opera as a genre.

 

Television Targeting

Television programming targets particular audiences to gain revenue through advertising. Comparing New Zealand programmes such as Being Eve, Gliding On and The Insiders Guide to Happiness, students can see the way content, style and structure target different demographics.

 

Animation Nation

Multi chaptered DVD compilation for different learning levels: tracking the evolution of animation in New Zealand from 1930 until the present day. Starting offshore with the first sound animation film Steamboat Willie we look at stop frame, cel, claymation, direct to film and computer generation by New Zealand practitioners. Footrot Flats, Ches 'n Dale and Weta digital feature.

 

Changes in Film Technology

Analysing genre and technological changes in New Zealand film and television — from 1900 to the present — and its impact on society. Covering silent film, early sound film, animation, the newsreel and the impact of television (advertising and early programming), modern cinematography and special effects.

 

Short Takes

An extensive collection of New Zealand short films is available for screenings. Because of the time potential (4–6 shorts making up an effective screening structure), several formats could be employed: women filmmakers, New Zealand identity in short film, a historical progression in technique and use of technology and others. Short Film titles menu available on request and extensive background notes provided.

 

Heavenly Features

New Zealand's largest selection of New Zealand feature film (early to modern; over 100 titles) available for individual, small group viewing, or class screenings. Extensive background material related to production and criticism available to assist ongoing study.
