Lessons 1-2: History of Wellington - Wellington’s Growth as an Urban Settlement

Learning Intentions: Students are learning to

  • Identify the key reasons for Wellington’s growth as a city in the C19th and the key functions that the growing urban settlement fulfilled.
  • Complete a cloze activity with key information on Wellington’s early function
  • Understand some of the constraints to the growth and expansion of the city and how these were overcome.
  • Answer a series of questions based on the DVD footage: What Lies Beneath: Under Wellington

Success criteria (How do students know they have achieved success?)

  • Students will be able to list 5 key functions that Wellington had in its early days as a capital city.
  • Students will be able to identify the key constraint to Wellington’s spatial growth

    • Students use and complete cloze activity handout What is an urban settlement and why do they form? Reasons for Wellington’s early growth (lesson1 Handout 1). This then forms notes for the students to file. Teacher's Copy

    • Students view DVD footage What Lies Beneath and answer a series of questions on the Te Aro area of early Wellington. Teachers could then examine how this reveals land use characteristics similar to the Burgess concentric zone model. Teacher's Copy
