Activities
This lesson will focus on the ramifications and consequences of representations and teach the students how to write in an extended manner to attempt a merit / excellence response.
Collect the homework responses.
Put the last question on the board:
Question Four: “Messages, values and representations in media texts reflect the society in which they are created.”
Anaylze this statement with reference to an identified group / culture
AND at least TWO media texts you have studied.
Give out A3 paper and get students into groups.
In what way do the texts we have studied reflect the society in which they were created?
Give one text per group
Labour Party Political
Face the Nation
Standing in the Sunshine
Eye Witness News
Gone up North for a While
Remind students to go back to their timelines and find events that might be of interest to the five texts – from 1970 – 2000.
Brainstorm how the texts might reflect the society bearing in mind the events / attitudes and ideas from the time. Give students fifteen minutes to do this.
Feedback from each group and copy into books.
Ask students to highlight – underline three – five points they thought were interesting out of the collected thoughts. Discuss these with their partners.
Students to use these as a basis for writing their response. Remind them they need to use at least two texts. They should try and use three. Face the Nation would be a good one to bring in at this time.
This is to be started this lesson and then completed for homework.
You could also extend the discussion by think about overall consequences of the representations, messages and values. This essay by asking them to Analyse is expecting students to be approach the essay from a wider point of view. If they focus on ways in which the texts reflect the society and the ramifications of this reflection they will be engaging with the question in a way that will help them lift their performance from achieved to a merit or excellence response. They MUST however, use their texts as examples to prove their points.
Some of the more general consequences are:
- Stereotypes might be re-enforced and this means that the representation continues.
- Certain texts might miss-represent an era.
- Women might be empowered by the representations and messages given in the texts.
- If there are varied representations and messages the audience might come to understand the diversity inherent within groups of people.
- Modern audiences will understand issues and ideas of the time through the messages and values of the texts
There are many others.
