Representation of Women

Lesson 13: Discussion and Debate

Students use discussion as a basis for a debate moot and prepare in groups the possible breakdown of topics for the debate.

Learning intentions Students are learning to…

  • To use a debate to pull out key ideas of the representations / messages and values in the texts.

Success criteria (How do students know they have achieved success?) I can…

  • I can break a debate moot down into parts and find examples from the texts we have studied to backup the ideas.

Activities

This lesson continues with the material being discussed in lesson twelve to ascertain the purpose of the text Gone up North for a While.

Students to go back to the three questions from yesterday’s lesson:

  • How is the young girl represented in this extract?
  • What might the purpose of this drama have been?
  • What messages are being presented through this story?

Give them about fifteen minutes to finish discussing these questions. You may want to re screen the extract at the beginning to help prompt their memories.

Write up class responses on the board and copy into books.

At this stage if you have time and feel that the class might benefit from thinking about the issues more widely it might be a good opportunity to run a fairly impromptu debate.

Debate: Choose a topic that will work for your class and divide the class into three groups. One group will be the affirmative, one the negative and one the jury. Each member of the affirmative and negative team to come up with one major point and provide examples from the four extracts. The members of the jury need to come up with one affirmative and one negative idea. Once this is done present the debate. Each team should be encouraged to build on the comments of the past speaker and use them as points of argument. The teacher should record as much of this as possible.
The jury need to record two points as to why they think either team should win.

Possible debate moots:
The representations of women on New Zealand television are fair.
Women are strong and powerful except when they are cleaning.
To be a strong woman you have to be tough.
Television has too much influence in the representations of women.

Record interesting points, type them up later and give to students as notes.
