Activities

This lesson gives students some critical ideas with which to think about advertising and the problems with female representation.

Play Eye Witness News extract

Write questions on board and re watch:

  • What are the two roles Catherine Saunders describes women being shown in?
    Dumb line up of broads – pretty tacky ladies in their twenties, and Housewives.
  • What is the reality gap?
    The gap between what real women do and what women do in
    Commercials.
  • How were men cast?
    As the professionals, and provided 83% of the voices heard.
  • What does Keith Moran call the advertising industry?
    A very conservative industry

Record answers on the board to make sure all students have got them.

Give out Eye Witness News grid and get students to fill these out discussing with each other their findings. Pair Share to check results with others.

Go back to the extract and freeze at 15.52 and ask students to copy down the quote.

Bus Stop: Pre-divide A3 paper into two sections. In the top write out the following: What are some of the messages / ideas that emerge from this item? In the second half, what are some of the consequences / ramifications of women being represented in the way they are in advertisements?
