Oratory – Words in the Frame

Assessment

Effective oratory is often used to establish a relationship between the orator and the listener/audience. What techniques do they use to do this?

You should write 200-300 words.
Use specific examples from the NZFA resource DVD.

Points could include:

  • Paralinguistic techniques such as gestures – pointing etc
  • Looking straight at camera for direct address
  • Use of pronouns – "we" / "our"
  • Anecdotes
  • Use of humour
  • Allusions
  • Use of statistics
  • Emotive language
  • Connotative meanings of words
  • Innuendo
  • Euphemisms
  • Rhetorical questions
  • Emphatic/exclamatory statements
  • Comparative constructions
  • Informal language – contractions, ellipsis, colloquialisms
