  • Describe on a flow chart some of the typical aspects of leisure in New Zealand during the Seventies and the ideas which led to changes in leisure activities.
  • Compare using a T-chart leisure activities, fashion and city-living in the Seventies with these aspects of New Zealand life in the present.

Four Faces of New Zealand

Introduction:

This footage shows the tradition of beachside holidays enjoyed by a huge number of New Zealanders during the 1970s. It also covers the emerging hippy culture and international influences in fashion and hairstyles particularly for men. This, along with the changing faces of New Zealand’s four major cities, highlights the ways in which New Zealand was slowly becoming just a little more cosmopolitan and some New Zealanders slightly more urbane in their thinking at this time.

Lesson Outline

Watch The Way We Were footage. Draw the students’ attention to “Pine Tree” Meads, if they don’t already know who he is. Discuss why the things shown in this footage were alien to New Zealand at this time. Highlight the roots of the hippy movement overseas as a anti-war, anti establishment movement which was a reaction to the conservatism of the 1950s. It was also a movement closely connected to the youth culture which had emerged in the 1960s and technological changes in society including the contraceptive pill and the spread of ideas through mass media.

Students can then complete a flow chart using Resource Six or something similar showing some typical features of New Zealand before the 1970s, the causes of change and the nature of new ideas during and since the 1970s.

Watch the Holiday footage and discuss why this style of holiday might be so important and enjoyable to New Zealanders. For example, the enjoyment of our extensive beaches, generally temperate climate and large middle class with access to cars and caravans but tending not to travel overseas for holidays at this time.

Watch the Four Faces of New Zealand footage and have students note down the ways in which the cities were changing at this time and the reasons for this change. Also discuss the idea that cities were beginning to take a more significant place in the national conscience.

For either holidays and/or city-life have students complete a T-Chart comparing these aspects of life in New Zealand then and now. Encourage them to compare their own experiences of life including the style of holidays which they take and their own experience of New Zealand cities. Another issue which may be discussed is the extent to which the classic New Zealand beach holiday is threatened by rising house prices and the extremes of wealth which did not exist in the seventies.
