Introduction:

It is interesting to note that the sporting achievements and celebration of them was not that much different in the seventies to what it is today. Sport and particularly rugby has been of major importance to many New Zealanders for many decades. Cycling, cricket, swimming, rowing and athletics continue to have a high profile in New Zealand; although in terms of success there has been a shift in emphasis away from track to field events for the latter. The activity for this topic could be done in a single lesson or extended over two or more with students doing their own inquiry about the importance of each sport to New Zealand since the 1970s.

Lesson Outline

Start with a discussion of the relative importance of sport to many New Zealanders. Different high profile sports could be brainstormed or the class’ top ten sports could be ranked individually or on the board.

Show the relevant footage, stopping where necessary to allow students to complete the activity below. If some time is to be spent looking at sport, it is worth viewing other Film Archive disks, in particular the Fifties disks which provides a good comparison in terms of the 1950 Empire Games, held in Auckland.

As students watch the footage, have them note down the different sports which they see in columns 2-3 of the Resource Five table.
