New Zealand Society: the Seventies

Lesson 7-9: Music: Pre MTV

Out on the Street, Space Waltz (1974)

Learning Intentions; students are learning to…

  • Identify the musical styles and international influence on New Zealand Music during the 1970s.
  • Identify the uniquely New Zealand elements which were emerging at the time.

Success Criteria; students will know they have achieved the learning intentions when they can…

  • Complete an inquiry assignment which shows an awareness of some New Zealand music during the 1970s, the influences on this music and the elements of it which are unique to New Zealand.

Relevant Footage:

Part One, Mass Media
Music:
Space Waltz
Kiwi Rock
Radio with Pictures

Other Resources:
Use youtube to find clips from Bowie, punk or new wave bands and a modern New Zealand parody of the same from Flight of the Conchords.

Introduction:

These music clips show various musicians at the time who were largely following overseas trends, whether it be the Bowiesque Space Waltz, The New Wave of Dave Dobbyn or the punk rock of The Suburban Reptiles. Dave Dobbyn, Chris Knox and the Finn brothers - perhaps because in addition they offered something more unique - have lasted the distance and are now respected spokespeople for New Zealand music. Contemporary groups now commonly celebrate, parody or just, in a very post-modern manner, simply appropriate and pastiche these same styles today.

Lesson Outline

Show the various clips. Ascertain if students have heard of any of these before. How are the bands typical of the 1970s in terms of fashion? Have they seen similar styles in more recent bands or other international groups? Have students complete the inquiry task Resource Four which should take between 2-4 lessons.

Students can then present their findings to the class in the form of a poster or if possible a PowerPoint presentation or similar which incorporates examples of the music they have found.
