New Zealand Society: the Sixties

Lesson 8

Specific Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the main events and experiences of people in 1960s New Zealand

  • Explain the nature of race relations in the 1960s

Teaching / Learning Sequence

  1. Start with material related to Springbok Tours in New Zealand. See web resources for details.

  2. View footage: “Controversial Issues: South Africa and Rugby”: Cinesound Review, Third Test at Bloemfontein

  3. Questions: What is unusual about the All Black team? (all white players). What does the footage from Bloemfontein tell us about the climate of apartheid in South Africa? (i.e. no non- European players or spectators!). What was the main reason for the protest in Auckland? (i.e. All Black team chosen without a Maori player to tour). Note: that this was an Australian production. New Zealand broadcasters did not deem it necessary to be shown in New Zealand.

  4. H/W or Extra Activity: Write a short letter from South Africa, either as a black South African or an All Black; or as a protester in Auckland, describing your thoughts and experiences relating to the 1960 tour.
