Specific Learning Outcomes

Explain how the role of men and women were defined by the culture of the 1960s.

Teaching / Learning Sequence

  1. Brainstorm: how does a “culture” define its roles? Star diagram could include: expectations of men and women, advertising, Government policy, acceptable mores, jobs etc.

  2. View footage: “Gender and Fashion”: Hairdressing Competition; “Sport and Recreation”: Golden Shears

  3. Discuss the roles and/or stereotypes shown in the two clips. What do they say about gender roles? What is missing from the clips that might give us a better impression?

  4. View footage: “TV Ads”: Teaching; “People”: Kelston High, Jazz

  5. Do these clips give us a better idea of people’s roles in the school environment? How does it compare to your school or teacher?!

  6. H/W: Find an item that represents NZ’s current “Pop” culture. For example, a NZ band on CD or cut out of a magazine; a famous NZ film star; TV personality etc
