Specific Learning Outcomes
- Describe the influence of advertising on gender roles in the 1960s
- Explain how the roles of men and women were defined by the culture of the 1960s
Teaching / Learning Sequence
- Discuss and define the key words: gender, stereotyping, advertising (See “Key Terminology”)
- Draw and/or Discuss the “typical” items a man and/or woman of the present day should have. What are their characteristics? (i.e. cell phones, label clothes, perfume).
- View footage: “Gender and Fashion”: Young Miss/ Mr New Zealand, “TV Ads”: Matinee cigarettes, Brylcreem, Jergen’s Lotion: Pinecone, Austin.
- Compare and contrast the images presented in the footage. This could comprise of a Venn diagram note, or dividing a students page/ A3 paper in half, i.e. “Today/ 1960s”
- Extra footage: “TV Ads”: Bristol Meyers, Mennen Skin Bracer, Jergen’s Lotion: Lobster, Fact Insecticide, Caltex IC Plus.
