Specific Learning Outcomes
Describe the main events and experiences of people in 1960s New Zealand
Teaching / Learning Sequence
- Recap previous work- main events. Then write on board/ introduce the next series of footage items (below). Students must choose one event to focus on, and take notes about it while viewing. Discuss what “taking notes” means here, and give students some focussing questions (e.g. Who? Where? Why?)
- View footage: “Significant Events”: The Visit of Her Majesty, Reception for the Beatles, Compass: The First Five Years, Wahine Disaster, The Moon Landing, USS Halibut.
- Discussion questions: Why was the Queens visit so important (compared to today)? What is the contrast between the people who supported the Queen and those who chose the Beatles? (i.e. young vs. old), Why was New Zealand so late to introduce Television? (i.e. very conservative society).
- Formative Assessment (see Assessment guideline): Students investigate their chosen event (from above) and write a mock newspaper article, describing that event.
