  • Students will be able to make informed value statements on mixed relationships during the 1950s.

Lesson Outline

  • Begin by briefly discussing whether or not there are situations today when marriages or relationships between people from different cultures might cause tension.

    Show The Boys Hit Town:

    1. What does Mike McRoberts’ father mean by the phrase ‘white sheep’?
    2. What did Lina Manual of Wairoa want to achieve?
    3. How did it affect Christchurch?
    4. Why were parents apprehensive when Judy and Marty Christie began seeing each other?
    5. Marty is reluctant to call Judy’s father racist, do you agree?
    6. Do you think the reasons for both sets of parents having reservations would be the same or different?

  • As an alternative or in addition to the questions above use the three level viewing guide (Resource Six: Three Level Viewing Guide) as a basis for a discussion on these issues.
