  • Compare this portrayal to the place of Maori in the media today.

  • Students will be able to make clear their own views on the portrayal of Maori in the media during the fifties.

  • Begin by brainstorming ideas about Maori and the media today:
    Possible ideas to consider might be
    - Maori participation within the media eg. Maori Television,
    - Maori politicians and political views
    - Use and pronunciation of Maori words and place names
    - Maori content quota
    - Music
  • Now show Maori
    1. How accurate is the portrayal of Maori in this film?
    2. Why would it be unacceptable as a national broadcast today?
    3. Why do you think broadcasts like this one were produced?
  • and Ngaruawahia: Canoeing the Waikato.
    1. What is Ngaruawahia better known for today?
    2. Is this just innocent fun, a slightly patronising view of the Maori or racist coverage?
