Royal Visit 1953
Lesson Outline
Begin a discussion on the importance of a Royal visit. How interested would the students be in a Royal Visit by Queen Elizabeth or Prince Charles. Students could form a continuum from ‘uninterested and wouldn’t even watch it on television’ to ‘To see a royal visit I would travel a great distance and cancel other plans’. Ask students to justify where they place themselves on the continuum.
- Watch the footage on the 1953 Royal Visit.
- Students can make notes, a brainstorm diagram or create an illustrated wall display using the following headings:
1. Visible Features: fashion, cars architecture
2. Commentary: Tone, vocabulary and message
3. Patriotism toward Britain
- Discuss the differences between this footage and a contemporary news feature on an event such as a sporting tour or the visit of a high profile band or celebrity. What are the reasons for the differences?
