Achievement Standard 1.2: Communicate Historical Ideas
LEVEL: 1
CREDITS: 4
ASSESSMENT: Internal

Introduction

This activity assesses History Achievement Standard 1.2. It requires you to write a magazine article based on the protest movement that you researched for your 1.1 research task. You should look at some copies of this magazine so that you can write an article which has an appropriate format and style.

Focusing Questions (AS09210)
You should structure your article around the following focusing questions:

  1. What was the background of the protest movement?
  2. What actions did the protesters take in order to convince others of their views or make a stand for what they believed in?
  3. What were the consequences of the actions that the protesters took?

Requirement One – Historical Ideas with Supporting Evidence

Your article must communicate key historical ideas. Historical ideas are generalisations about history. Historical ideas need to be supported by evidence. This example may be helpful.

Maori people who were involved in the anti-tour movement attempted to connect the struggle against apartheid in South Africa with the race-relations situation in New Zealand.
    [Historical Idea]

At one anti-tour meeting, Donna Awatere spoke about her motivation for protesting. “What happens in South Africa to the black people also happens here” she said.
    [Supporting Evidence]

To gain a grade of Excellence your article must identify a range of relevant key ideas that thoroughly cover the context, and you must provide evidence that supports each idea.

Requirement Two – Format and Style

Your article needs to be presented in the format and style that would be required for publication in the North and South magazine. It should…

  • have an appropriate title
  • use appropriate photographs, maps, diagrams, pictures and/or quotations (each with an appropriate caption)
  • be typed and formatted with two columns of text on each page
  • be 3-4 A4 pages long
  • use formal language appropriate to a North and South magazine
  • consistently use appropriate names, dates, places, numbers and terms
  • have an appropriately formatted bibliography. Your teacher will give you information about the appropriate format.

To gain a grade of Excellence your article must communicate ideas in an article with consistent application of the appropriate historical format and style.

You must submit your article to your teacher on or before ________________
