LEVEL: 1
CREDITS: 4
ASSESSMENT: Internal

Introduction

Imagine that you are an historian who works in the History Group at the Ministry of Culture and Heritage in Wellington. The History Group has decided to publish a series of articles for the North and South Magazine. Each article will focus on a different group of New Zealand protesters from the period 1945-1985. You have a choice about which protest movement to base your article upon.
You can choose either:

  • Bastion Point occupiers
  • Raglan Golf Club protesters
  • Maori land marchers
  • Anti Springbok Tour, 1981

The first step is to complete some historical research about the key events of the protest and the personalities involved.

Conditions
All tasks should be completed on your own. You will be required to submit an authenticity certificate on submission of this research assignment.

Task One – Identify Possible Sources

Your teacher will give you some background information and will show you some video material to help you to start thinking. In class on ______________ you will be given ten minutes to complete a source identification exercise.
Download the sheet to complete this short exercise.
You need to identify FIVE possible sources to reach the standard.

Task Two – Gather Historical Information, Recording Source Details

You are to base your research around three focusing questions:

  1. What was the background of the protest movement?
  2. What actions did the protesters take in order to convince others of their views or make a stand for what they believed in?
  3. What were the consequences of the actions that the protesters took?

Conduct your research, gathering and recording a significant amount of relevant historical evidence from your sources that answers the focusing questions. This evidence could be written or visual. You need to find sufficient evidence to answer each focusing question.
You must gather this evidence from at least FIVE different sources.

For each piece of evidence, give full details of its source, following these examples:

Evidence from a book
Richards, Trevor, Dancing On Our Bones, Wellington, 1999, page 97.

Evidence from a website
Puke Ariki Website:
http://www.pukeariki.com/en/resources/pathfinders/springbokpath.asp
(Accessed 17/6/06)

Ask your teacher for information about how to record the details of other types of sources.

Task Three – Select Relevant Historical Evidence and Organise it

You are required to select specific pieces of evidence from your research that are relevant to the focusing questions and organise them on the A3 sheets that your teacher will provide. You need to carefully follow the instructions on these large sheets (Appendix #2).

Task Four – Make appropriate and worthwhile evaluative comments

You are also required to complete an evaluation of the historical investigation that you have undertaken. Appendix #3 has some specific instructions about how to go about this.

You are required to submit your completed Selection and Organisation sheets for each focussing question and your evaluation on _____________
