Activities
• To explore different perspectives on the New Zealand identity and its evolution in the past 100 years
Think/pair/share
Students think of attributes to describe different sports or sportspeople (i.e.netball vs tennis vs soccer vs rugby player)
Pool these preconceptions and stereotypes and discuss where these assumptions come from (and possibly the recent “handbag incident” in Christchurch after the 2006 Super 14 Final involving Chris Masoe and Tana Umaga – why was this news?
Where do these stereotypes come from?
Show “One Network News” coverage of the All Blacks loss and “Steinlager - Stand By Me” and have students answer questions in their own books to be marked by the teacher to informally assess whether each student has grasped the key concepts of representation, messages and values.
