Teaching/Learning Sequence
1. Start with class discussion about their immigrant ancestors (may need to be completed for homework).
Where did their family come from? When did they arrive in New Zealand? Why did they come to New Zealand?
Record answers as a class brainstorm.
2. What is an immigrant?
Students write their own definition of an immigrant. In pairs, they compare their answer. As a class, write one key definition of an immigrant.
3. New Zealanders have come from many different countries. On a blank world map, locate and name the following countries that immigrants have come from. This is not a list of every country that immigrants have come from. It is the countries that are mentioned in the two DVD’s:
- Croatia
- Yugoslavia
- United Kingdom
- Italy
- Lebanon
- Poland
- Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Afghanistan
- Cook Islands
- Samoa
