A large crater opened up swallowing roads/houses/cars.


b. What caused the hazard to occur?
The collapse of an old mine shaft underneath the town. These shafts were built between 1890 and 1935 and were pumped with water when mining in them ceased. There is an extensive array of old mine shafts underneath Waihi.


c. What was the reaction of the local Waihi residents to the hazard?
They were angry, concerned and upset.

b. What must the mining company do before starting their operations?
Seek permission to mine from a resource consents panel. Stakeholders (interested or affected people) come to hearings and present their opinions to the panel. The panel then makes a decision on whether mining can proceed in the area or not.


c. Overall, what do you think the general opinion is of the Reefton locals?
They seem to be for the mining to go ahead because of all the jobs it will create and the massive boost it will provide to the local economy.
