Activities

Viewing
Class watch Whale Rider. Students should take notes on film language and connotations.

Students are each given two film reviews to read www. whaleriderthemovie.com

Students highlight all comments about film language and the implications of that film language.

Discussion
Class discusses what comments have been made and chooses two or three quotations which are written on the board.

Writing
Students write a page analysing the use of film language in Whale Rider. They must use these quotations in their analysis. Teacher should check students progress using quotations during class time taking good examples from students for others to copy.

Homework
Locate and photocopy at least three further secondary sources on Niki Caro.
