Learning intentions Students are learning to…

  • Identify the film language used by Niki Caro
  • Explain the connotations of that film language

Success criteria (How do students know they have achieved success?) I can…

  • I can give examples of mise en scene, soundtrack and montage in Sinistre
  • I can explain what these specific examples connote

Activities

Graphic Organiser
Students copy or print out graphic organiser. They will need at least one A4 page.

Students watch Sinistre (12.33mins) and fill out the first two columns as they watch the short film. Students are given 10 minutes to fill out the third column.

Discussion
Re-watch Sinistre as a class, pausing the film and discussing examples of the film language and its connotations with the students. For example high contrast lighting creates shadows and a sense of unease and paranoia; gothic imagery alludes to the horror genre; black and white alludes to Film Noir.

Homework
Students write two paragraphs on Sinistre explaining what they think Caro was trying to suggest in her use of film language. To hand in.
