Activities
Think/Pair/Share
Teacher pauses DVD on a still from Caro’s films or advertisements (close up of tattooed face in Doc Marten Ad/ picture frames of great leaders in Sinistre/ Edmond’s Baking Powder on shelf in Sure to Rise)
Students describe what is literally happening in the frame. Students then explain what else is suggested by the image in the frame (jot ideas down on paper).
Students then share their ideas with a partner.
One person from each couple is asked to share ideas with class and these are brainstormed on the board into two categories: Denotation and connotation
Repeat activity with one or more examples.
Definitions
Students asked to write in their own words a definition for these terms.
Teacher asks two students to write their definitions (one for connotation and one for denotation) on the board and class discusses and modifies definitions.
