In a unique opportunity for young and old to delight in the heritage of the Southland district, a public screening will be held at The Southland Museum & Art Gallery, 108 Gala St, Invercargill on Saturday 24 May 2008 at 3pm.
At this free screening people view a range of gems from Southland’s past, including historic clips of significant events for the district. A Portrait of Southland made in 1956 is a fascinating look at the people of Southland and the industry of the time. The geographical span of the district is captured from Riverton to Ohau, Lumsden and Mataura then on to Te Anau, the Manapouri and Milford.
National Programmes Manager Jane Paul who will be presenting this screening says, “My personal highlight is a wonderful section on mutton birding and the birders being ferried out to Titi Islands on the Wairua. Then there’s some charming footage of Invercargill itself showing off its architecture, parks and schools in the 1950s. I like to hope people may be able to spot their relatives in these films or possibly even themselves.“
The same weekend there will also be two screenings at the Fiordland Cinema in Te Anau. This programme called Manapouri – Power and Protest is a selection of early films about Manapouri and Te Anau.
Jane Paul encourages people to use this unique opportunity to view the Manapouri programme as it features the construction of the hydro-electric construction in 1965, the Duke of Edinburgh’s visit in 1968, as well as rare footage from 1925 of Lake Manapouri.
The Film Archive has not been in the region for six years so is very excited to visit the area and offer the district the opportunity to see its very own history on the big screen. The screenings last for one hour.
Young and old are invited to these unique screenings brought to Southland by the New Zealand Film Archive.
