To celebrate Christmas the St Peter’s Hall in Paekakariki will open its doors Wednesday 19 December for a special screening of Christmas cheer titled All About Christmas 1907 - 1970.
Drawn from the Film Archive’s collections of home movies, newsreels, dramas and advertising we present 70 years of Christmas cheer in 70 minutes – covering the food, the presents, the holidays, even the Queen’s Christmas message from 1958.
Outreach Manager Jane Paul, who has curated the programme, says there really is something for everyone. “It’s a real smorgasbord. The programme takes a look at what Christmas means to us as New Zealanders, through many different types of films. There are insights into real family drama and rituals from Otaki to Ruatoria as well as official films. There are warnings from the Transport Department on how to be safe on the roads and the first ever televised message from the Queen in 1958.”
The screening starts at 6pm and piano accompaniment will be provided by pianist Gilbert Haisman. There will be a special guest appearance from Father Christmas.
A gold-coin and/or a tin of food for the Food Bank is required for admission to the screening. It will be a truly memorable night for young and old.
