THE COLLECTIONS
The Film Archive's collections reflect the breadth of New Zealands moving
image heritage since cinema arrived in 1895.
Professional and amateur filmmaking is represented, including special collections
recorded by New Zealands most prominent filmmaking individuals and production
companies. The Film Archive is, for example, home to the Pacific Films and Hayward
Collections.
Film and Video Collection
The Film and Video Collection, predominantly of New Zealand material, contains
moving images from 1895 to the present day.
The collection includes features and short films, newsreels, documentaries, home
movies, music videos, broadcast programmes, commercials and video art.
Documentation Collection
The Documentation Collection includes promotional, critical and historical materials
from 1896 to the present.
The collection includes stills, posters, scripts, clippings, programmes, publicity
material, production records and files, personal records, storyboards, props and
costumes, animation cels, taped interviews and equipment.
National Television Collection
The Film Archive maintains the National Television Collection on behalf of NZ
on Air.
The collection represents a diverse range of broadcasters and programming including
television news, dramas, documentaries, games shows, music videos, infomercials,
youth programming and sport.
Taonga Mäori Collection
The Taonga Mäori Collection consists of items with significant Mäori
content.
The collection includes visual and audio records of karanga, whaikörero,
iwi and hapu whakapapa, pöwhiri, wharenui and marae, kapa haka, Waitangi
Day events (from 1934), raranga, tukutuku and whakairo.
The Film Archive is actively developing relationships with whanau, hapu and iwi
to ensure appropriate long-term care of and access to the Taonga Mäori Collection.
The Chapman Collection
The Chapman Collection of New Zealand news and current affairs television provides
a vivid insight into New Zealand politics and society.
Deposited by Professor Robert and Noeline Chapman of the Political Studies Department
at Auckland University the collection includes audio recordings of television
news from the 1960s. VHS recordings date from the 1984 snap election to yesterdays
news.
